The semester is ending and so will our advising hours in Campbell Hall. Today will be our last day of advising for the semester and the hours will be from 1:15pm to 2:45pm. I apologize for not notifying you all earlier but we’ll do our best to answer any lasting questions you may have either during the hours today or via email before the semester ends and we leave for winter break. Afterwards, we will still be checking our advising email but responses may be delayed.

In addition to my previous post on courses that satisfy the breadths requirement, below are the CogSci courses that could fulfill your American Cultures requirement, and coincidentally, they’re all under Society, Culture, and Cognition:

Anthro 160AC : Forms of Folklore (4)
Educ 140AC : Literacy Individual and Societal Development (3)
Info 142AC : Access to American Cultural Heritages (3)
Info 182AC : Print, Literacy, and Power in America to 1900 (3)
Ling 55AC : The American Languages (4)
Psych 125AC : Second Language Learning and Bilingualism (3)
Psych 166AC : Cultural Psychology (3)
Psych 167AC : Stigma and Prejudice (3)

For those that aren’t doing a concentration in this area, only Educ 140AC and Psych 166AC are under the core distribution requirement (the requirement where all students must complete one course from each area). Otherwise, the rest of the courses above can be used towards your upper division units requirement (you need at least 30 units under the major).

After a lot of researching and struggling with the L&S and schedule websites, I’ve finally came out with an elaborated list of CogSci courses that would satisfy each of the seven L&S breadths! I know it’s a long list and it might be confusing so I apologize for making it look so complicated (><). This list was compiled from what I found in the packet of CogSci reqs and from a probably not-updated L&S website, so the list will be in a similar format as the packet and some of the courses listed may not be offered or have certain restrictions that apply.

Cogsci Breadth Courses (DOC)

If you want to see which courses are offered that satisfy a specific breadth during a certain semester, you can search for it via this link: http://ls-breadth.berkeley.edu/search.php

Also, if you want to make sure you have satisfied your breadths, you can try filing a degree-audit report off the DARS (Degree-Audit Report System) under Bearfacts (it should calculate it automatically). You can manage the the number of DARs you make, adding the ones you want or deleting the ones you don’t need.

Sorry for the delay but this Wednesday we are holding a schedule planning workshop for students interested in enrolling in cognitive science courses. We will briefly go over all the requirements you need to complete the major and help you organize a course checklist for previous and future semesters. Come and check out which classes you should take for Spring 2009, learn tips about the major or specific courses, and meet other peers interested in Cognitive Science!
