Prescription For CogSci Majors

Nifty advice and fun news for the average and not-so-average Berkeley CogSci student

Rolling Applications February 7, 2008

Hello CogSci majors!

We are accepting new peer advising applications on a rolling basis this semester. If you’re even a little interested in peer advising, please reconsider turning in an application.

If you’re concerned about the 3.0 GPA requirement, don’t worry about it. We’ve removed that requirement so as long as you’ve taken at least the prerequisites and are genuinely interested in the major, you can apply to become a peer adviser. We just want to know which courses you have taken so far so that we can fill you in on common questions (and answers) about core classes that you may not know about yet.

If you think you lack experience, that’s okay. Many peer advisers started straight after they declared. If you don’t have an answer to a peer’s question, you can always direct him/her to Carol, other advisers, and even professors. We aren’t supposed to have all the answers so no worries. :)

If you are wondering about time commitment, it’s about a minimum of 1-2 hours of peer advising per week in the lobby (during which you can do homework or eat lunch if it’s slow, and the hours don’t have to be back to back), in addition to approximately bimonthly meetings, depending on what issues we might want to discuss.

You can contribute to our advising blog here or even join in on the fun of creating/editing the Cognitive Science Major Handbook (not required)!

You don’t need to sign up for units but if you want to, there’s the option of signing up for CogSci 98/198 units (1 or 2).

The semester is hectic with only three advisers so please send an application our way (cogsci.peer@gmail.com or 359 Campbell – Carol’s office) and join us!
